This is the first PSM programme in South Korea and Asia.

(Kuala Lumpur=Koreanpress) Ramani Rathir = The Graduate School of Technology Management (GSTM) at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), South Korea, is now officially recognized as a Professional Science Master Affiliation (PSM) programme provider.

These degrees serve the needs of scientists who want to improve their skills in business. The PSM program is designed to fill a management need for technology-based companies, government agencies and non-profit organizations. The business training is complemented by advanced science training in pertinent fields depending on the science/engineering degree being taken.

The world prestigious universities including Georgia Institute of Technology, Stanford University, Illinois Institute of Technology, University of Melbourne, Australia, and University of British Columbia, Canada are offering the PSM programme. Previously there were only four countries providing PSM programmes world-wide. These were the USA, Canada, Australia and UK. Now the PSM programme has come to the Asian region and South Korea has the distinction of being the first country in Asia to offer this programme.
GSTM has been operating the PSM programmes since 2012 and it acquired official recognition as a PSM affiliated institution this year. The master’s degree on Energy Commodity Trading & Financial Engineering (ECTFE) of UNIST GSTM is accredited as an official PSM programme.

“UNIST ECTFE is the only accredited PSM programme in Korea” said Prof. Mooyoung Jung, dean of GSTM. “It will foster world class traders in the field of energy commodity and investments, based in Ulsan, which is a centre for petrochemical industries and also a North-East Asia oil hub.”

UNIST set up the ground work for the PSM programme with support from the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (formerly the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology), South Korea. This government support will be continued for 5 years until the year 2017.

The UNIST ECTFE programme specializes in the field of energy commodity and financial engineering. The programme will give students the knowledge and skills required to become a highly qualified trader in energy commodity fields such as international finance, financial risk management, supply chain management, derivative accounting and other aspects of the trade.

The school has already invited six adjunct professors from the required industries, including S-OIL, SK Energy and Hyundai Heavy Industries. They will provide practical knowledge based on expert work-on experiences.

“The current graduate schools of financial areas in Korea are tilted to only financial commodity,” said Prof. Seo, Byoungki, director of the UNIST PSM programme. “Our programmes add on practical understanding of energy commodity and thereby creating experts in the energy commodity field gained though scientific knowledge by the convergence of humanity and science.”

UNIST GSTM is offering Business Analytics along with the ECTFE programme. Both programmes will be accepting applications from August 24, 2013 for 2014 admissions.

Interested applicants can source GSTM at http://gstm.unist.ac.kr/index.sko and explore the ECTFE programme at UNIST.
