This is not a remake but one which has some independent aspects.

(Kuala Lumpur=Koreanpress) by Christopher Berridge = If you like Star Wars, then you will certainly be interested in Robocop. There was an earlier version released in 1987 that had Paul Verhoeven as the director with Peter Weller in the lead.

The latest will be released this February with a host of robots – of course, and cyborgs...

The 2014 version is surprisingly good and even has elements of fun in it... However, it drops short of the rock edge and nail biting tension of the previous film.

The dark satire too is missing and you somehow do not go entirely into the film.

Still it attempts to grapple with the ideas and lifestyle of a future world. Primarily the human struggle with machines, Big Brother surveillance and the pressures of the information age come o the surface... In doing so, it brings the future much nearer to us.

The movie is not a re-hash of the 1987 film. Director José Padilha has made a valiant attempt to entertain audiences and has succeeded to some extent. One still cannot stop comparing this film to its predecessor, which is a bit unfair on it. Robocop 2014 should be enjoyed on its own merits but still..

In the final analysis, Robocop has you somewhat coming out of the cinema quite satisfied. It does not have the insane world of the previous movie but portrays a more human facet of life in the not too distant future.

It is to the credit of the film that it does not try to be as close to the original as possible.
As mentioned earlier, it examines the tenets of being a human, the family bond and not having one’s private space being intruded upon.

When RoboCop delves into these aspects of future life, it emerges as being very honest, instead of just retelling the 1987 Robocop film.

So for an evening of just adventure and popcorn binging, go see Robocop.
