These five countries provide the best health care in the world.

(Kuala Lumpur=Koreanpress) Nancy Joseph =InternationalLiving.com’s annual Global Retirement Index states that France, Uruguay and MALAYSIA
provide the best and most affordable health care in the world.

The Health Care Index takes into account the cost of care and the quality of service. The number of people per doctor and the number of hospital beds per 1,000 people are also considered. Other aspects included are the percentage of the population with access to safe water, the infant mortality rate, life expectancy and public-health expenditure as a percentage of a country’s GDP.

1. France
In addition to being number one in the health care category ofInternationalLiving.com’s annual Global Retirement Index 2014, France also has the best health care system in the world, according to the World Health Organization.Despite the French’s love for a meat-and cream-rich diet, topped with alcohol and cigarettes, they have been living much longer in recent years. The women’s life expectancy averages 85 years and the men at 78.

2. Uruguay
Uruguay prides itself in having a variety of health care options. These are a public health care system for people who cannot afford to pay for private health care, a number of private health insurance options and the most popular option, a hospital plan called “mutualista.”  This has earned Uruguay a number two position in the health care category of the InternationalLiving.com annual Global Retirement Index 2014.  Its Uruguay correspondent, David Hammond, who has resided in the country for seven years, revealed: “My personal experience with health care in Uruguay has been positive. The cost is a fraction of what I paid for private coverage in the U.S.”

 3. Malaysia
Just a few years back, no one would think Malaysia would become a medical-tourism destination. But with a health care that soon came to be recognized as among the world’s best and cheapest, it has taken the third spot in the InternationalLiving.com annual Global Retirement Index 2014. The country’s medical expertise is equal to or better than that of most Western countries. Despite the low cost of health care in Malaysia, many expatriates take up private health insurance. With a large number of national insurers, no one company is preferred. Instead expatriates shop around, looking for the best and cheapest offer.

4. Costa Rica
This tiny nation offers excellent and affordable health care. This is mainly the result of its government’s investment in the health sector. Unlike many other countries on the South American continent, Costa Rica boasts political stability. It comes fourth in the health care category of the InternationalLiving.com annual Global Retirement Index 2014. This is due to the fact that by any standard, Costa Rica has some of the best health care in Latin America. Another plus point is that thepublic and private health systems are constantly being upgraded. This has new hospitals, new equipment and improvements in staff training constantly taking place.

5. Mexico
Being a neighbour of the U.S. has many Americans crossing the border to beat the rise in medical bills. But it is not just the close proximity, but also that Mexico offers affordable and top-notch health care. Estimates put health care at a quarter to a half of what it would cost in the U.S. Medical insurance with Mexico’s national health care service, costs less than USD300 a year. While private insurance will cost more, depending on age and pre-existing conditions, it is still a fraction of what it would cost in the U.S. for a similar coverage. The country comes fifth in the health care category of the InternationalLiving.com annual Global Retirement Index 2014.
