(Kuala Lumpur=Koreanpress) Nancy Joseph = Malaysian housewives had been using coconut oil for ages. They used it as cooking oil, also as hair oil and massage their bodies for a smooth, shiny skin. They used natural virgin coconut oil.

Then came the modern age and coconut oil was produced commercially in a refined state. It gave rise to the bogey man of health – cholesterol. Coconut oil was said to contain tons of it and responsible for a lot of heart diseases and other ailments. Housewives switched to palm oil or other unsaturated oils.

But now research has found, pure coconut oil has a number of benefits. In fact it has been classified as a “superfood.” Its fatty acids have profound positive health benefits.

Here are the ten top benefits:

1. A Unique Combination of Fatty Acids with Powerful Medicinal Properties

Coconut oil has been vilified in the past because it contains saturated fat. Now new research shows that saturated fat is completely harmless. On top of it, their saturated fat is not of the ordinary kind, but contains Medium Chain Triglycerides(MCT) and as the names suggests, is of medium length. Most other fatty acids are long-chain fatty acids, but the medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil are metabolized differently.

Once in the digestive tract, they go straight to the liver, where they are used as a quick source energy or turned into ketone bodies. These bodies are said to  therapeutic effects on brain disorders like epilepsy and Alzheimer ’s disease

2. People who have Coconut Oil in their Daily Cooking are very Healthy.

Research had varying amounts of medium and long chain triglycerides fed to six healthy men. The men eating the most MCTs, on average ate 256 fewer calories per day. Another study on 14 healthy men revealed that those who ate the most MCTs at breakfast, also ate significantly fewer calories at lunch

A ketogenic (very low carbohydrates and very high fat) diet is currently being studied to treat various disorders. Compared to soybean oil, one study in 40 women, showed  coconut oil reduced LDL cholesterol while increasing HDL. There was also improvement in heart rates and therefore reducing cardiovascular attacks from occurring.

Coconut oil can serve various purposes that have nothing to do with eating it. This translates as cosmetic for the improvement  and appearance of their skin and hair.

Individuals with dry skin show have seen the moisture and lipid content of the skin improve with the sue of coconut oil.

Coconut oil can also be very protective against hair damage and also as a sunscreen, blocking about 20% of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Another application is using it as a mouthwash in a process called oil pulling. This kills harmful bacteria in the mouth, improve dental health and reduce bad breath

9. Its Fatty Acids Can Boost Brain Function in Alzheimer’s Patients

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia worldwide and occurs primarily in the elderly. In Alzheimer’s patients, there appears to be a reduced ability to use glucose for energy in certain parts of the brain. As an alternative, Ketone bodies can supply energy for the brain and other malfunctioning cells and going on to reduce symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

In 2006, a study on the consumption of medium chain triglycerides led to immediate improvement in brain function in patients with the milder forms of Alzheimer’s. Now MCTs  are being intensively studied as potential therapeutic agents in Alzheimer’s disease.

10. Coconut Oil Can Help You Lose Fat

Given that coconut oil can reduce appetite and increase fat burning, it makes sense that it can also help one to lose weight. The oil has been found to be especially effective in reducing abdominal fat, which lodges in the abdominal cavity and around organs.

This is the most dangerous fat of all and is highly associated with many of today’s  diseases. To see if one is healthy, circumference of the waist can be easily measured and can indicate if there is  any excess fat in the abdominal cavity.

Forty women with abdominal obesity, supplementing with 30 mL (1 ounce) of coconut oil per day lead to a significant reduction in their waist circumference over a 12 week period. Another study in 20 obese males, noted a reduction in waist circumference of 2.86 cm (1.1 inches) after 4 weeks of 30 mL (1 ounce) of coconut oil per day.

This number may not seem too impressive, but realize that these people did not take any exercise or weight reducing calories. They lost significant amounts of abdominal fat simply by adding coconut oil to their diet.

Many specialty stores and supermarkets do carry virgin coconut oil. Another source would be Indian grocery stores. Or go for today’s trend and get on to Amazon.
