Defeat his political successor and secure the majority
World's oldest elected leader to take oath as Prime Minister

(Kuala Lumpur=Koreanpress) KP News Team = Mahathir Mohammad, who is regarded as Malaysia's national sovereign, returned to power and took the oath of office as prime minister on May 10, becoming the world's oldest leader 92 years old in this year.

As the opposition coalition led by former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad won on the 9th general election, Malaysia made its first historic regime change in 61 years after independence in 1957.

The opposition coalition led by Mahathir, Alliance of Hope (PH), secured a majority of 113 seats out of a total of 222 seats. The ruling coalition National Front (BN), which is mainly made up of the unified Malay National Organization (UMNO) led by Prime Minister Najib Rajabal had won only 79 seats.

The opposition coalition promised to reintroduce oil subsidies and to abolish the 6% GST(similar to Value Added Tax in Korea) introduced by Najib's government during the election campaign.

Mahathir previously served as the fourth Prime Minister from 1981 to 2003 and he appointed Najib as his political successor and served as his mentor. He resumed politics in 2010 but was virtually exiled from the ruling party in 2016, because when Prime Minister Najib 's slush fund scandal broke out, he insisted that Najib should resign. Since then, he has been turned into a leader of the opposition party and was nominated as a prime candidate of the PH at the end of last year.

The Alliance of Hope(PH) led by Mahathir is the main axis of the People's Justice Party (PKR), which is under the influence of former deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim. The People's Justice Party has secured the largest number of 42 seats in the Alliance of Hope (PH).

Mahathir oppressed Anwar of being alleged homosexuality because he had been in conflict with him during his prime minister's term in 1999. These who had opposed for almost two decades have recently become reconciliation under the banner of regime change, and Mahathir has pledged to amnesty rehabilitation Anwar in the election campaign. Local media are predicting that Mahathir will hand over his prime minister when Anwar is released.

Anwar led the opposition party in the general election in 2013, winning the vote, but the seats were behind the ruling party. Anwar was later charged with homosexuality and corruption. He was sentenced to five years in prison.

Najib Rajabal was suspected of taking $700 million from '1Malaysia Development Berhad'(1MDB), State-owned investment funds, but the judicial authority dismissed him. However, the fund is still being investigated in the United States for alleged bribery.
