“New Democracy Experiment or Greed of Long-term Ruler?”

(Kuala Lumpur=Koreanpress) Benjamin Kim = I wonder if this happened to world politics. Malaysian Prime Minister Mohamed Mahathir, who left politics 15 years ago, returned to his original position through a general election. He changes his political party. Mahathir ended the era of the National Front (BN), which has been in power for more than 60 years since 1957, leading the Alliance of Hope (PH) in the May 9 elections.

Moreover, since the National Front created the 'Gerrymandering', which is favorable to them in the face of the general election, even with the support of public opinion, there was a prospect that it was not easy for the Alliance of Hope (PH) to secure a majority of the Parliament. Opponent supporters coexisted with victory and defeat even before the election. The resurgence of the 92-year-old leader who led the era of the National Front with the iron fist ruling for 22 years starting from 1981 was so dramatic.

Mahathir is the father of Malaysia. This election has confirmed it again. Many opposition leaders have challenged the National Front with the Unified Malay National Organization (UMNO), but all of them failed. However, Mahathir combined with opposition in a short time collapsed proudly the 60-year regime. It was last year that Mahathir, who had criticized the corruption of the vested system, joined the opposition.

Many foreign journalists commented that "Mahathir, who had been focusing on strengthening the rights of Malayas and Muslims as an iron-fist ruler over the years, was inaugurated again as a prime minister of a multi-ethnic nation". Malaysian experts also analyzed that this election was a result of multi-ethnic voters, not Malaysian or Chinese. This is because the Alliance of Hope, which emerged as a new ruling power, is made up of various classes, including reformers, nationalists, Islamic minorities and former enemies of Mahathir.

This election was the most monumental result in Malaysian history because the old regime, which was a political elite union with the background of ethnic group race, collapsed and a new democratic experiment could be realized. Even those who have criticized him for a while have positively evaluated about his resurrection. "If he was due to wealth and power, he would have taken a different path than the re-election, and he would not have promised to hand over his prime minister to a successor within two years," one politician said.

As former Prime Minister Najib Rajabal has been forbidden from leaving Malaysia, "clean up deep-rooted evils" action is expected to take off soon. Prime Minister Mahathir should fulfill all the demands of those who want economic development and those who have made regime change possible. He should make reforms for those who want to change society. So we can expect that Prime Minister Mahathir will start to punish the privileged class.

On the other hand, there is a negative view of the re-appearance of the Mahathir as in the case of the Philippines. The Philippines, which experienced Ferdinand Marcos dictatorship, is undergoing the era of irony ruler Rodrigo Duterta in the process of democracy. Thailand has been resumed in the era of military rule, and Myanmar Prime Minister, Aung San Suu Kyi who was the symbol of human rights is now accused by the international community for ethnic cleansing. Brunei, Malaysia's neighbors, has maintained its monarchy since 1984.
