Ban from leaving the country and execute seizure search

(Kuala Lumpur=Korean Press)  Kim Hyung Woo = Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, have been banned from leaving the country on May 12 for alleged massive corruption.

The new government took action after the couple's name was confirmed on the passenger plane list for Jakarta. Najib said he intended to travel as a family vacation plan, but his explanation was not accepted as speculation that it might be an overseas escape to avoid punishment for alleged corruption charges related to a state-owned investment company 1MDB.

On the 15th, the Malaysian Audit Office released an audit report on 1MDB, which is at the center of allegations of corruption. The audit report was designated as a state secret in April 2016 and was banned from reading. In the same year, a member of the House of Representatives released some contents and was sentenced to prison for leakage of official secrets.

According to the report, the principal and interest to be repaid by 1MDB for the loan from maturity from November 2015 to May 2039 amounted to about RMB 42 billion (about KRW 11 trillion), and the stock capital issued by 1MDB from 2010 to 2014 was only 1 million ringgit (270 million won).
The report also pointed out that insufficient stock capital represents instability of Investment Development Company 1MDB, and that many of the poor management conditions have been confirmed, including major investment decisions without sufficient discussion and review.

1MDB is a company established in 2009 by former Prime Minister Najib Razak to attract domestic and foreign capital and conduct economic development projects. However, he has been suspected of raising a slush fund of up to $6 billion (about 6.4 trillion won) from 1MDB.

The prosecution and the anti-corruption commission (MACC), which investigated the corruption of 1MDB in 2015, found that the $700 million (about 750 billion won) of 1MDB was captured by the Prime Minister's account, and then Najib fired the prosecutor general and voluntarily resigned the anti-corruption chairperson.

Also, the new government announced the ban on foreign departure on the 16th to former police chief, Khalid Abu Bakar, former treasurer, Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah and former anti-corruption commissioner, Dzulkifli Ahmad who are suspected of 1MDB corruption investigations.

The police had carried out a large-scale seizure search of Najib's five places including two apartments in the city center, and the mansion and office near the palace from the evening of the 16th to the following morning. Under police control, investigators were found picking up boxes of seized goods in their trucks until dawn. In particular, the search for the Taman Duta mansion is said to have taken six hours because of the huge size.

Najib was defeated in the last general election and resigned on the 12th in the leadership of the ruling Unification Malay National Organization (UMNO) and former All-National Front (BN).
