Following Mahathir's meeting with former Deputy PM Anwar Ibrahim

(Singapore=Korean Press) Kim, Kyung-tae = Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong met Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on the 19th. PM Lee visited Malaysia and held a 30-minute talks with Dr Mahathir.
This is the first meeting between both leaders in 10 days since the Malaysian general election on May 9. His visit to Malaysia was the second visit by foreign leaders following the visit of King Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei since Prime Minister Mahathir was elected again.

PM Lee said on the visit that he expressed the Singapore government's intention to keep bilateral relations intact. He was in a close relationship with former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Rasak, who was defeated in the last general election. Former PM Rasak agreed to open the high-speed railway linking PM Lee with Kuala Lumpur and Singapore by the year 2026. The visit is likely to confirm PM Mahathir's intention about this agreement. PM Lee and PM Mahathir mentioned that they had a half-hour bilateral meeting on their respective Twitter accounts.

PM Lee also held talks with former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Wan Azizah Wan Ismail of the Deputy Prime Minister, who are considered to be the next prime minister after Mahathir in Putrajaya. PM Lee was the Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore in the 1990s when Mahathir served as Malaysian Prime Minister. Former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar also assisted Mahathir at the time and served as Malaysia's second - ranking figure. Lee Hsien Loong served as Deputy Prime Minister from 1990 to 2004, while Deputy Prime Minister Anwar was in office from 1993 to 1998. As the PM Lee, meeting with Anwar, whom he often met during his tenure as Deputy Prime Minister in the 1990s, may have welcomed his release.

In a series of meetings, PM Lee invited PM Mahathir and Deputy PM Anwar to visit Singapore. The meeting of the two prime ministers continued since Mahathir and Goh Chok Tong, Prime Minister of Singapore at the time had a talks in Langkawi, Malaysia in 1994.
